Ladyboy Thailand guide to society, cities and events
On this page
Ladyboys in Thailand, known in Thai as kathoey or sao praphet song, are trans women who are part of everyday Thai life. This guide covers their place in society, the cities and events worth knowing, how to behave as a visitor and the legal situation in general terms.
Kathoey in Thai society
Thailand has a long tradition of gender diverse people, and trans women are more visible there than in most countries. You see them working in shops, offices, salons, restaurants, television and fashion. Many Thai families accept a trans daughter, although acceptance varies a lot between families, regions and generations.
Visibility does not mean everything is easy. Trans women in Thailand can face discrimination in hiring, problems with documents that show their birth gender, and pressure at home. Understanding both sides helps you see Thai ladyboys as people, not as a tourist attraction. For the history of the word itself, read our page on kathoey.
Cities to know
Trans women live all over Thailand, but some cities come up again and again:
- Bangkok. The capital has the largest trans community, a big LGBT scene, universities, media companies and many clinics and salons run by or for trans women.
- Pattaya. Famous for cabaret theatres such as Tiffany's Show and Alcazar, and home to the Miss Tiffany's Universe pageant.
- Phuket. A beach destination with Simon Cabaret and a relaxed, international atmosphere.
- Chiang Mai. The northern city has a calmer pace, a student population and a growing LGBT community.
Our cities section has local guides with neighbourhoods, transport, safety tips and trans friendly places as general categories.
Events through the year
Several events bring trans women in Thailand into the spotlight every year. Miss Tiffany's Universe is a national pageant held in Pattaya and broadcast on Thai television. Miss International Queen is an international pageant for trans women, also connected to Pattaya. Bangkok Pride and other Pride events in cities around the country have grown into large public celebrations. Dates change each year and are announced by the organisers, so check our events calendar before you plan a trip.
Travel etiquette for visitors
A few habits make a big difference:
- Treat trans women the way you would treat any woman you meet. Polite, friendly, no staring.
- Do not take photos of people without asking, including performers off stage.
- Avoid questions about surgery, hormones or her "real name". These are private.
- Use she and her, and follow the words she uses about herself.
- Learn basic Thai politeness. A small wai and a smile go a long way.
Visitors should also know where LadyBoy.net stands. Dating on our site is between adults, without payment. We do not list or allow escort services or paid meetings of any kind, and accounts that offer them are removed. See safety for more.

The legal situation in general terms
Thailand passed a marriage equality law that took effect in January 2025, so same sex couples can marry. Thailand does not yet allow a change of legal gender, which means a trans woman's ID documents still show the gender recorded at birth, even after transition. This affects travel, banking, job applications and some everyday checks. Laws can change, so for anything official, check current government information or speak to a qualified lawyer.
